C. magnivalva Kieffer

A greenish brown species with an enlarged hypopygium, typical of species that mate on substrate.

From Freeman (1961)

Antennal ratio (AR):    Kieffer gave the AR as about 2, while Freeman pushed this up to 2.5.    However in one specimen that he measured, it is only about 1.5.    I estimate AR at about 1.5 - 1.8 in Australian specimens.
Clypeal setae - about 22 - 26.
Thoracic setae: Achrostichals, perhaps about 12 or 13; Dorsolateral about 16 - 22; Prealar about 5 - 6; Scutellar, anterior row about 4 - 9; posterior row about 8 - 9.
Wing Length: 2.2 - 2.7 mm; wing width: 0.60 - 0.65 mm. VR about 0.84 - 1.07.
LR about 1.65 - 1.74.

Illustration of the hypopygium of C. magnivalva

Tips of the styles with numerous spines rather than setae.

Found: Northern Territory - Island Lagoon, Magela Creek, Alligator Rivers region.
Queensland - Noosaville; Sarina; South Townsville; Common, Townsville.
Cytologically identical material has been collected from Lautoka and Laucola Bay, Viti Levu, Fiji and Punaauia, Tahiti.

Peck et al. (2002) referred Australian specimens from the Alligator Rivers region of the Northern Territory to C. crassiforceps.    However this is incorrect, see note on the cytology under the larva.
