Course Advice

If you are a first year student planning for second year:
You will need to think about the major(s) you are interested in undertaking.
Information is available on the Faculty of Science web site. At this stage it is wise to keep your choices open by choosing more than one major most likely in related disciplines. Once you know this, you should look at the second year subjects that are prerequisites for completion of your major(s).

To complete a major in Genetics, you will need to undertake all three second year subjects offered. These are 652-214 Principles of Genetics (1st semester), 652-215 Genes and Genomes (2nd semester) as well as 652-216 Molecular and General Genetics (1st or 2nd semester).

If you are a second year student planning for third year:
At this stage you have most likely chosen the major(s) you are interested in pursuing. Have a look at the information available on the Faculty of Science web site to find out what subjects you will need to study next year to fulfill the prerequisites for your chosen major(s). In addition to this, look at other subjects you will need to complete your degree.

A Genetics major requires a minimum of 50 points of third year Genetics subjects, including 652-302 Molecular Genetics and 652-304 Genetic Analysis.

If you are interested in undertaking Honours in Genetics you will need to complete a major in Genetics.

CHANGES TO GENETICS SUBJECTS 2008-2010

There will be a number of changes to the subjects offered by the Department of Genetics over the coming years.

The most important changes for students to note are:

  • 652-214 Principles of Genetics in Summer Semester has been discontinued.
  • 652-306 Experimental Genetics will be offered for the final time in 2008.
  • Some 300-level subjects (or their replacements) change the Semester of offering in 2009 or 2010.

Changes to 200-level Genetics:

652-214 Principles of Genetics will continue to be offered in Semester 1.

The Summer Semester offering of 652-214 has been discontinued.

652-215 Genes & Genomes will continue to be offered in Semester 2.

652-216 Molecular & General Genetics Practical will continue to be offered in both Semesters 1 and 2 but will change its name to Experiments in Genetics from 2009.

Changes to 300-level Genetics:

652-301 Genomes and Evolution will continue in Semester 2 in 2008 and will be replaced by a new subject, Evolutionary Genetics and Genomics, to be taught in Semester 1 from 2009.

652-302 Molecular Genetics will continue in Semester 1 in 2008 and will be replaced by a new subject, Genes: Organisation & Function, also in Semester 1 from 2009.

652-303 Developmental & Cellular Genetics will continue in Semester 2 in 2008 and 2009 and will be replaced by a new subject, Principles of Cell and Developmental Biology, to be taught in Semester 1 from 2010, jointly by the Departments of Anatomy & Cell Biology, Genetics, Botany and Zoology.

652-304 Genetic Analysis is a practical subject that will continue to be taught but will change to Semester 2 from 2009.

652-305 Human Genetics will continue in Semester 1 in 2008 and will be replaced by a new subject, Human & Medical Genetics, to be taught in Semester 2 from 2009. The prerequisite for Human & Medical Genetics will be Principles of Genetics only.

652-306 Experimental Genetics will be offered for the final time in 2008 Semester 2. There is no replacement for this subject.

600-312 Research Project B will continue to be offered by Genetics in 2008 and 2009. However, entry into this subject in Genetics is limited to very few students.

Prerequisites for entry into current 300-level subjects in 2008 have not changed.

The subject changes are outlined below:
